CODATU XVII – 2017 – Hyderabad (India): Smart, Inclusive and Sustainable Mobility
The 17th CODATU Conference was held in Hyderabad (India) from 4th to 6th November 2017, in partnership with the Urban Mobility India Conference and Exhibition (UMI), the annual event of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs of India (MoHUA) organized by the Institute of Urban Transport (IUT). The UMI Conference was born from the 2016 National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP) of the Government of India, which focuses on building capacity at national and local levels to enable sustainable development of urban transport in the country. The 2017 edition brought together 800 participants, among which 150 international participants, and allowed very rich exchanges between local authorities, transport operators, research institutes and universities, consultants and companies.

Welcome address in the Conference Opening Session…
By choosing to join this national Indian event, CODATU wished to mark the 20th anniversary of the “Institute of Urban Transport”, a technical body of the Ministry created at the end of the CODATU VIII conference in New Delhi in 1996.
During the inaugural session, Mr. Dominique Bussereau, President of CODATU, announced CODATU’s desire to strengthen partnerships between cities in the north and cities in the south, in order to meet the challenge of sustainable urbanization of the world. An appeal will be launched shortly by CODATU, on the basis of the work carried out at the Conference, with a view in particular to preparing the next CODATU Conference which will take place in Dakar in 2020.

The sessions of the International Scientific Committee
The International Scientific Committee of the conference, composed of members from key institutions of the urban mobility sector, chose as theme for the conference “Transport for Inclusive Urban Societies”, in order to highlight the key role of transport in the access of different socio-economic groups to professional and social opportunities.
This theme has been divided into six main sub-themes:
- Exclusion in transport;
- Environmental issues;
- Goods in urban areas;
- Safety and security in urban transport;
- Supply and demand management;
- Smart cities: concept and practices in urban policies;
The training sessions
The Conference was followed by 3 days of training, organized by CODATU and open to all young transport and mobility professionals (35 participants). The objective of these trainings is to address the main issues of mobility in developing countries, and to promote the professional development of professionals, in an interactive spirit. These sessions mobilized 5 experts from 5 different regions:
- Prof. Ali Huzayyin, Vice President of CODATU and Professor of Transport Engineering and Planning at Cairo University (Egypt);
- Prof. Ashish Verma, Professor of Transport Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISC), Bangalore, India;
- Prof. Marcela Munizaga, Professor of Transport Engineering at the University of Chile in Santiago, Chile;
- Mr. Etienne Lhomet, Mobility and Urban Planning Consultant (DVDH) based in Bordeaux (France), specialist in the implementation of tramway networks;
- Prof. Charles Rivasplata, Urban Planner and Professor at San Jose University, California (USA);
Training sessions focused on congestion pricing, introduction of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in cities in developing countries, modeling of urban transport systems, intermodality and thinking about the tram system, urban planning and mobility planning, the origin of the concept of sustainable development.
