CODATU – UMI Conferences joint event

Since 1980, CODATU has organized every two/three years International Conferences on urban transport with the aim of promoting sustainable urban mobility policies in emerging cities. Each time, this event takes place alternatively in a different city from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. By organizing this Conference in cooperation with local and international partners CODATU aims at gathering together academics, researchers, practitioners, local authorities, private sector and civil society to discuss persisting challenges and future opportunities, and to share experiences in order to boost international cooperation.

The next CODATU Conference will take place in India from 4th to 6th November 2017 jointly with the 10th Urban Mobility India Conference and Exhibition (UMI), an annual flagship event of the Ministry of Urban Development. The origin of the conference is the National Urban Transport Policy (NUTP), 2006 of the Government of India, which lays strong emphasis on building capabilities at the state and city level to undertake the task of developing sustainable urban transport in the country.

The event is organized by the Institute of Urban Transport (IUT) that was established in 1997 as a concrete outcome of the CODATU VIII Conference in New-Delhi. This will be a unique opportunity to celebrate IUT 20th Anniversary.

The call for abstracts : “Transport for Inclusive Urban Societies”

Along the years, urban residents from various socio-economic groups have often been deprived of professional and social opportunities due to being captive to transport options. In parallel, over the last decade, it has been observed that priorities are given to infrastructure development more than to management and operation and citizen’s needs. This induced the latter to rationalize their mobility options against time budget rational. Consequently, the infrastructure acted as an enabler for the citizens to establish their residences at ad-hoc locations often at more distant places, where their financial restrictions allowed to obtain affordable or better housing conditions, at the expense of accessibility. On the one hand, this was the generator of uncontrolled urban sprawl. On the other hand, it is the generator of fully fledged informal neighbourhood embedded in the city, and, hence, creating unmanageable traffic congestion with obvious irreversible social, economic, health and even patrimonial degradation.

This conference will address these phenomena under the following sub-themes, considering that transport options (motorized and non-motorized) are transversal and can be addressed under any of the sub-themes:

B: Environmental concerns
C: Urban Freight
D: Security and safety in urban transport
E: Demand and supply management
F: Smart cities: concept and policy practice

All accepted papers will be published in reviewed conference proceedings (with ISBN). The best papers will be considered for special issues and/or publication in several international journals (Journal of Case-Studies on Transport Policy, Journal of Transportation in Developing Economies, Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences,…).
