CODATU Regional Conference in Bogota in 2021 !
“Which challenges for the development of urban mobility in Latin America?”
The context of urban mobility in Latin America has evolved significantly in the past few years. The transformations started from mass transit projects, which have been the most visible aspect of the reforms. The BRT systems of Quito (Trolebus in 1995, Ecovia in 2001) and Bogota (Transmilenio in 2000) marked the beginning of two decades of intense activity, giving a new youth to the public transport institutional systems. Since Latin american cities have started thinking about their urban mobility model, they have gained international recognition (BRT, cable-car, cycle-lanes, public bike sharing systems). Since 2000’s, Latin America is also well-known for its innovative public policies (social urbanism, tactical urbanism, car-free day).
Although major cities and capital cities of the region have reached a certain level of maturity in terms of urban transport systems, they are still trying to reach an equilibrium between public and private modes. A debate about the future of such systems and the adequate modes for latin american cities seems to be particularly relevant at this stage.
The ambition of the conference is to create an open platform for debate and exchanges between academics, researchers, practitioners, local authorities, transport professionals and the civil society, in line with the bi-annual CODATU international conferences.
