CODATU XV – 2012 – Addis Ababa (Ethiopia): The role of urban mobility to (re) shape cities

In
order to identify solutions to improve urban mobility in cities experiencing fast-growing urbanization, every two years, CODATU organizes a huge platform for reflection in which local and national governments, international organisations, donors, research scholars, transport and urban mobility experts exchange, learn and innovate.

The Fifteenth International Conference of Urban Transport (CODATU XV) was co-organized with Addis-Ababa Municipality, from 22nd to 25th of October 2012, at the African Union Headquarters. 32 years after the first CODATU conference in Dakar (Sénégal), and 10 years after CODATU X in Lomé (Togo), organizing CODATU XV in the Ethiopian capital city marked the return of CODATU in Africa. The participants were invited to report the improvements during the last ten years, and to open new perspectives for the coming one.

The International Scientific Committee, composed of 30 members from key institutions of the urban mobility sector, chose the following theme for the conference: “The role of urban mobility to (re) shape cities”.

This theme has been structured around four sub-themes:

-Which Governance to promote sustainable mobility?

– How to plan cities of the future ? Which articulation between transport and urban planning ?

– Which kind of transport are required? How to manage traffic ?

– How to include the populations in the transport policy ?
